Exam Question Example

1.
The A Team
The A Team poster is a teaser poster for the film. The poster shows the four main male characters that by appearance are very manly and iconic tough gentlemen such as Mr T. The poster does not give any visual codes to the storyline of the film but the way in which they are holding very large guns and in an abstract setting looking very roughed up indicates violence and that the film is an action film. The target audience for this would probably be male teenagers to the ages of 50. This is usually the target audience for an action film of this type with very strong iconic male figures.

Sex and the City 2
The Sex and the City contains many visual codes that can be related in a few ways. The poster shows the 4 main female characters of ages 35-50. The ways they are presented in the poster have been done to show many important codes. Sarah Jessica Parker is shown as the main character because of the way her position has been made out to be the dominant main character of the film due to her being in the middle of the group of women and the way her long dress flows in front of all of the other women. The film shows contrast having these very middle class women in fine dresses usually associated with iconography of city living. Contrast is shown through this as the women with clues in the title (sex and the city) are shown out of their environment and seem to be standing in a very bright and foreign desert. The layout of the design shows the four main female characters. This design shows the signs of a layout that belongs the genre of a rom-com film. We can guess this from the bright colour, big, bold font and lots of smiling faces in scenery that is not one that they are accustom too. The layout tells us that the story follows the four girls as they end up being in a position that ends them into a harsh desert environment.

2.

A.
Sex and the city 2 gives codes and reasoning for two different audiences. The first is due to the films age related targeting through the use of middle aged women. The middle ages female age group is targeted through relatability to these characters, they would share some of the same humor, mannerisms and social norms of the women that would be watching it as it would be with any common age group. The second target audience is teenagers and young women. The film and TV show is focused on the sexy lives of these women in their big and boastful careers filled with love life drama and high-end living. This gives the target audience of young women something to look up to, not to copy even or relate but to admire. Many of these young women may be wishful of their high end jobs and love lives and use that as a means to fill their teenage lusts and school work as a career path.

B.
The Main Audience for Sex and the City 2 has been targeted through the use of age and gender. As soon as you look at the poster you are captured looking at 4 very well dressed middle aged women probably aged 35-50. This target audience directly hit the age group appeared on the film as female orientated through the use of these female characters.

C.
An example of this would be the first poster given (Sex and the City 2). This is given through the use of conveying two audiences through two uses of visual media. The first is the images of middle aged women on the front cover of the poster. This is age related targeting as the women on the screen will target the ages of those women and those who are from the same generation as those actresses. The second use of media targeting used is the font of the film. This gives the impression that the film is for young women maybe even teenagers through the use of it’s glossy and shining font that resembles jewelry that of a young woman would crave. The titles use of the word sex is usually one that be accustom to the younger generation films not that of the middle aged women shown.
